Before I found Brain Highways, my muscles were tensed out all the time. One of the things that really helped me early on was acupuncture. In Orlando, Florida there is a wonderful man who does non-profit acupuncture, where you pay only $15 for a session. It's called the Balancing Point, off Conway, if anyone is interested who is local to the area.
In addition to acupuncture, they do cupping. Cupping is amazing. It's an Eastern tradition that pulls the skin and muscles into the cup for several minutes and then releases them, allowing blood to circulate back into areas where your muscles have been tight and stagnant. If the areas turn dark purple then it means you really had a lot of stagnation and the cupping helped tremendously. Over time, or if you don't have a lot of stagnation, the cupping marks only turn a light pinkish purple. The marks go away in a few days. It's very safe; it just looks weird.
If you are interested in cupping or have had it done before, you can actually buy your own cupping set at Amazon.com. I purchased the AcuZone Premium Cupping Set (made in Korea) for about $30.00. It's so worth the money. Because I still get tense in my shoulders and neck, I use the cups around my shoulder region whenever I'm feeling extra tight. It feels so good to cup the area and then release it to allow the oxygen to flow better.
So... acupuncture and cupping are two wonderful methods that help deal with pain and tight muscle regions.
